| HOW TO ESTIMATE YOUR
YARD |
- If your lot
is square or rectangular, then take your width and multiply by your
length then divide by 9. This will give you the square yardage of your lot.
- Next, use the same formula to figure the square
yardage of the areas in your yard that will not require sod. Such areas include your
house, driveway, sidewalks, gardens, etc.
- Then subtract these areas from your total lot size.
The answer is the approximate amount, in square feet, of sod you
need to order.
If your yard is oddly shaped, then measure areas in you yard separately, such
as separating the back yard, front and sides. See figures to the right.
- Because these areas are not perfect squares, take your
measurement from the middle of these areas, multiply the length by the width. Add all areas together. Then follow instruction in step 2 and 3 with the
exception of not subtracting the house, the areas was never included in this method of
estimating.
- Odd shapes and extensive trimming may require
additional sod. Please call for assistance.

| HOW TO INSTALL SOD |
- Grade and rake soil to desired contour. For sandy or
porous soil, 2 to 4 inches of black dirt or top soil is recommended.
- We recommend the use of a starter fertilizer.
It should have a low percentage of nitrogen and higher percentages
of phosphorus and potash. The fertilizer should be raked or tilled
into the soil before installing the sod.
- Start along the house, driveway, or curb. Stagger
rolls, keeping seams tight but not overlapping. Install the sod
immediately.
- Trimming around trees, sidewalks and other
obstructions may be done with a knife.
- Begin watering as soon as you have a large enough area
installed so that you don't get wet while finishing the installation.
- With the soil moist, rolling is recommended to assure
good contact with the soil and to smooth out lumps.
- Watering should continue until the sod roots down.
This will take 1 to 2 weeks. Keep sod constantly moist to where the soil underneath is
damp.
